Sher Afzal Marwat is a prominent Pakistani lawyer and political figure. He is currently serving as the Senior Vice President of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). He has been representing several PTI politicians, including former chairman Imran Khan.
Early Life and Education
Sher Afzal Marwat was born on 4th April 1971. He received his education from Government Degree College Lakki Marwat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Later, he enrolled in the LLB program at the University of Peshawar. He then went to the United Kingdom, where he earned an LLM degree from Cardiff University.
Legal Career of Sher Afzal Marwat
Sher Afzal Marwat started his legal career after completing his education. He served as a Civil Judge at the Peshawar District Courts in 2004. Before joining the Supreme Court, he held the position of Civil Judge in the District Judiciary of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa under the Peshawar High Court (PHC). He then returned to legal practice.
Political Career of Sher Afzal Marwat
Before joining PTI, Sher Afzal Marwat was affiliated with the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) from 2008 until 15 October 2017. He announced in a jirga that he had quit the party. He justified his decision by saying, “I need not to remain in a party where I get no respect at all and where the leaders have no time to address the problems of people of my area”. On 16 April 2018, he joined the PTI.
Election Performance
Sher Afzal Marwat contested the 2018 Pakistani general election and the 2018 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial election from NA-36 Lakki Marwat and PK-91 Lakki Marwat-I, respectively, as an independent candidate. He received 92 votes in NA-36 Lakki Marwat and 33 votes in PK-91 Lakki Marwat-I.
Controversies
Sher Afzal Marwat was involved in a physical altercation with PML (N) senator Afnan Ullah Khan during a live TV program on Express News hosted by Javed Chaudhry. This incident garnered widespread attention and sparked debates in both political and media circles.
He was arrested on 14th December 2023 after leaving the Lahore High Court premises after attending a lawyers’ convention of Lahore High Court Bar Association. The Lahore deputy commissioner issued a 30-day detention order for Marwat. He was transferred to Kot Lakhpat Jail to serve the designated detention period. However, on December 18, 2023, Lahore High Court ordered the administration to immediately release him.
